He became the director of the Medical Research Council Protein Phosphorylation Unit at the University of Cambridge in 1985. He was the Director of Research at SynGen Biochemicals Ltd. A professor-at-large for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Weill Cornell Medical College, and a professor emeritus at Columbia University.
