On May 21, 2016, Amber Heard was granted a restraining order against Johnny Depp. On May 27, 2016, she filed for divorce after fifteen months of marriage because she accused him of domestic violence. Her lawyer said that he had been verbally and physically abusive towards her. Heard stated in court documents that on April 21 Depp hit her in the face when they were in their penthouse apartment in Downtown Los Angeles.
An eyewitness to the alleged abuse stated that he saw Depp throw a magnum size bottle of champagne at Heard. Amber’s friend, Tillett Wright, posted a photo of Heard with a large bruise. Wright said that the police were called after an incident on May 21 but she was not present.

Depp’s lawyer said that Heard was trying to gain more money in their divorce settlement by fabricating abuse claims. He also stated that Amber and her lawyer demanded $50 million to keep her mouth shut and not damage Depp’s reputation. However, Amber claimed that she never asked for any money and initially asked for $1 but later offered $7 million if he agreed to enter couple’s therapy with her.
The news of their divorce was announced in a joint statement of Depp and Heard. Their statement read “Our relationship was intensely passionate and at times volatile, but always bound by love. Neither party has made false accusations for financial gain. There was never an intent of physical or emotional harm.”
On June 1, Heard appeared in court and asked the judge to lift the restraining order against Depp. So that he could return to their shared home to collect some of his belongings, but it was denied by the judge who said that there would be no contact between the two until a further hearing in August.

While his publicist said that it was “much to do about nothing”.
