Conor McGregor is one of the most successful athletes in MMA. He is considered a top-level professional boxer and has many awards and accolades to his name. McGregor holds two UFC world titles as well as holding the legacy of the ‘Notorious One. This article discusses his childhood, career, and personal life. 

Conor McGregor has had quite a journey to becoming an influential figure in both MMA and boxing, earning nearly every accolade that you can think of along the way. Born into a family that was not very wealthy at all, Conor found greatness by sheer determination. This tiny pocket-sized child from Dublin would prove to everyone that size does not matter when he entered his first-ever kickboxing tournament at only five years old.

Conor McGregor’s parents, Tony and Dee, thought that their son would be a big success in life. But they never imagined that they would have him fighting professionally by the time he was 20 years old. It was just his heart and desire to succeed in life that prompted them to give him the opportunity to pursue a career in sports, but anyone would have been surprised if they could have guessed how far he would go.

McGregor is the middle child of three children. He has two older sisters named Erin and Aoife, and an older brother named Joseph. The McGregor siblings are close, but there were many instances where Conor got into trouble with his siblings.

Life of McGregor

His birth

Conor McGregor was born on July 14, 1988, in Crumlin, Dublin. Not long after his birth, McGregor’s father moved the family to Lucan, Dublin. When he was just a toddler, his parents divorced and he moved back to Crumlin with his mother. After this point in his life, he became determined to make a name for himself.

His education

There were a few fights in his family as young as 4 years old, but it wasn’t until he was 8 that he stopped playing sports. His family had been telling him that he was too small to play any of the sports that young boys typically like to participate in, so he moved to kickboxing. He began training at the age of 9 and took up fighting full-time when he turned 11.

McGregor’s childhood experiences weren’t pleasant, and that is why McGregor believes in the importance of hard work. He had never really been taught life’s morals and values until relatively late in life.

His personal life

His first marriage was to Dee Devlin and they had three children together. They were married for nine years and were divorced in September 2012. There were two children born out of this union, a daughter and a son.

Currently, Conor McGregor is dating his former partner of a year, Dee Devlin. The pair got together in October 2015 when they were both single and began dating in February of 2016. Although their relationship has been going well for the past year, she did not agree to marry him until she found out that he had been talking to other women about marriage proposals.

His Career

After he began his training in Dublin, Conor McGregor had over 25 fights under his belt when he began to turn professional. He earned the nickname “The Notorious” at the age of 15 and would fight for several promotions throughout his early career.

McGregor has won the UFC lightweight title (unified) and held it for two years before losing it in November 2016. In November 2017, he defended the belt against Eddie Alvarez (also unified), defeating him by a decision to win back his belt once again.

McGregor hasn’t lost a fight since 2012 and is currently ranked second by the UFC in the lightweight division.

Early career (2008–2013)

Conor McGregor was pretty much unstoppable in his early years, but things took a turn for the worse when he suffered two back-to-back losses. It was during this time that he decided to become a professional boxer. He was 14 years old at this point and had been fighting professionally for about three years.

In 2007, Conor began his boxing career by fighting in the National Boxing Association finals for The Irish Under-18 category. In 2008, he continued his boxing career by participating in the Junior National Championships.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (2013–present)

McGregor’s MMA career began a little later than most, but he still managed to become a UFC champion by the age of 25. He started out at lightweight and made his promotional debut in only his fourth fight.

Conor McGregor has been undefeated since joining the UFC, with 14 wins and no losses. His first bout was against Marcus Brimage in 2013 and then he faced Michael Johnson in 2014. In 2015, he faced Nate Diaz at UFC 196 and won by decision. Later that year, he faced Eddie Alvarez in Boston at UFC 202 and won via TKO (strikes) to win the lightweight title again. After this win, he faced Diaz again at UFC 202 and won via TKO.

Business ventures and endorsements

Conor McGregor started out with an investment of only a few thousand pounds in his early years. Once he became successful in the UFC, he decided to retire from kickboxing and focus more on MMA. The UFC awarded him with a $160 million contract, but after it was revealed that they were deducting his pay for taxes, many fans were not happy.

The Irish star has been featured on the cover of many magazines throughout his career including GQ magazine and ESPN The Magazine. He also appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! where he boxed Floyd Mayweather Jr, but McGregor ultimately lost to Mayweather by TKO (retirement).

Controversies

Conor McGregor has had a few run-ins with the law over the years. He was arrested in 2009 for fighting and possession of a deadly weapon. In 2013, he has arrested again for assault, criminal mischief, and other charges.

He also has some issues with his family members as well, as he got into a physical altercation with his sister in 2012. This altercation landed him in jail overnight along with a $400 fine due to resisting arrest charges that were filed against him.

He had another run-in with the law this year when he threw things at the UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov’s bus, injuring two fighters on the bus.

Shopping and other interests

Conor McGregor has been romantically involved with many different models, so naturally, he has an interest in fashion. He even opened his own clothing line called August McGregor. Many people were very excited about this new venture as we know he is a fan of fashion himself.

McGregor also enjoys playing video games, as there are many images of him playing FIFA all over social media. He also owns a stake in the Liverpool Football Club.
