Bhagwant Mann is a renowned comedian and a member of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). He was nominated for Chief Minister of Punjab on 18 January by Arvind Kejriwal. He is one of the most popular Punjabi Comedians. On the 10th of March, his party won 92 seats in the 2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly election and will take oath as 17th chief minister of Punjab on the 16th of march.
The Life of Bhagwant Mann
Bhagwant Mann was born on the 17th of October 1973 in Satoj village of Sangrur district of Punjab. His dad’s name is Mohinder Singh and his mother’s name is Harpal Kaur. His parents are very common men. He completed his graduation from Shaheed Udham Singh Government College situated in Sunam district of Punjab state.
Rise of Comedian Bhagwant Mann
He started to participate in his college youth festivals in comedy acts as well as in inter-college competitions. Bhagwant Mann won many awards in those competitions. He also participates at Punjabi University situated in Patiala. Where he won 2 gold medals for Shaheed Udham Singh Government College, Sunam.
Rise as Local Star
Bhagwant Mann started his career as a comedian. He is generally known for political comedy satire. He makes his routines to do comedy about regular Indian problems like politics, business, poverty, and sports. With the help of Jagtar Jaggi, Bhagwant Mann released his debut comedy album. Both of them then started a program on television named Jugnu Kehnda Hai. This program was televised on Alpha ETC Punjabi. After 10 days they both choose different paths. Bhagwant Mann finds his new comedy partner in the form of Rana Ranbir. Then both of them started another new comedy show again for Alpha ETC Punjabi named Jugnu Mast Mast. Bhagwant Mann and Jagtar Jaggi again reunited in the year 2006. They both then go on a tour of Canada and England. They organized their show out there named No Life With Wife.
Rise as National Star
Bhagwant Mann was famous in Punjab at that time. He then competed in the Great Indian Laughter Challenge aired on Star Plus in the year 2008. This makes him a national star and increases his audience.
After getting success in programs on television, he started appearing in films as a comedian. He appears in many Punjabi films such as Ekam, kachehri, Police in Pollywood, 22g tussi ghaint ho, Hero Hitler in love, Moga to Melbourne via Chandigarh, and Main maa Punjab Dee. He also appeared in the Hindi film Apne. His film Main Maa Punjab Dee gets a national award which was directed by Balwant Dullat. At this time he also started acting in the program named Jugnu Hazir Hai on channel MH One.
Political Career
Bhagwant Mann was active in social works and then he joined PPP (People’s Party of Punjab) in 2011. He also appeared in the Punjab assembly elections in 2012 from Lehra constituency. But he lost this election. Later he parted ways from PPP.
Leader in the new party
Bhagwant Mann later joined AAP (Aam Aadmi Party) to fight against corruption and for the development of the state. He also contested in the Lok Sabha elections in 2014 from the Sangrur district. He defeated union minister Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa in his very first Lok Sabha election. Bhagwant Mann defeated him by the margin of 211,721 votes. After that, he became the convener of the Aam Aadmi Party in Punjab state. But he resigned from that post because Arvind Kejriwal presented an apology to Bikram Singh Majithia. Later, he contested against Sukhbir Singh Badal and Ravneet Singh Bittu from the Jalalabad constituency in assembly elections held in 2017. He lost that election by a small margin of 18,500 votes.
Lok Sabha Elections
Bhagwant Mann was first elected in 2014 by defeating Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa in the 16th Lok sabha from Sangrur. He was very active in his first term. He was included in many parliamentary committee assignments as a member such as the Standing Committee on Personnel, Law, Public Grievances, and justice. Mann was also included in the Ministry of Rural Development, Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water and Sanitation, Member of the Consultative Committee and Joint Committee on Offices of Profit.
He was reelected in 2019 from Sangrur again by defeating Kewal Singh Dhillon of INC (Indian National Congress) and Parminder Singh Dhindsa of SAD (Shiromani Akali Dal). At that time he was the only selected member of Lok Sabha from AAM (Aam Aadmi Party).
Becoming Chief minister
He was very active in Punjab politics and vocal and helpful to the people of Punjab. He was in the top five vocalists in the parliament. Bhagwant Mann was the big face for the Aam Aadmi Party in Punjab. Aam Aadmi Party organized a poll to choose their chief minister for the people of Punjab from which Mann got 93% of the votes. Then Aam Aadmi Party declares him chief minister face of AAP on the 18th of January 2022.
Voting for the Punjab assembly elections 2022 held on the 20th of February. The voting percentage of that day according to the election commission of India is 72% which was the lowest in 15 years. The result of this assembly election was declared on the 10th of March. In these elections, Aam Aadmi Party won 92 seats out of 117 seats.
Bhagwant Mann contested in these elections from the Dhuri constituency and won by a large margin. In these elections, many big names of Punjab politics were defeated such as Ex-chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi, Ex-chief minister captain Amrinder Singh, 5 time CM of state Prakash Singh Badal, Sukhbir Singh Badal, Vikram Singh Majhitia, and Navjot Singh Sidhu.
He takes the oath of chief minister in the village Khatkar Kalan. It is also the village of Bhagat Singh.
